Bio: Michel Ledizet received a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the Rockefeller University in New York.  After being a post-doc at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York), and the University of California San Francisco, he joined the faculty at the University of California-Davis and then moved to Galileo Pharmaceuticals, a VC-backed biotechnology company in Silicon Valley.  He came to New Haven in 2001 and is now a Senior Research Scientist with L2 Diagnostics.

Outreach Opportunity- School Science Fair Judges

Saint Joseph School (159 West Main Street, Meriden CT 06451) will be having a 2 day (3/26/14 & 3/27/14), Preschool-Grade 8 STEM fair at Rosary Hall (Beneath St. Joseph Church). The school is in need of Volunteer judges for grade 6-8 projects.

Judging can take place anytime from 5-8pm on March 26th (with appointment as the hall will be empty), and all school day Thursday, March 27, 2014. Judging needs to be completed by 4pm on Thursday.

Dr. Wendy Hall is a senior official who has been working with the U.S. Federal Government for over 10 years in the world of policymaking.  Dr. Hall is a committed advocate of the need for recruiting PhDs who can bring a science-based, evidence-based approach to U.S. Government policymaking, especially in guiding complex decisions associated with the vastly changing landscape of dual-use technologies.

Two Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions in Discipline-Based Education Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The successful candidates will be part of an interdisciplinary team working to disseminate and integrate research-based instructional strategies in introductory STEM courses at UNL. These postdocs will work closely with co-advising faculty, Dr. Leilani Arthurs (Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) and Dr. Brian Couch (School of Biological Sciences).  They will assist with one or more of the following projects: (i) research on student and faculty perceptions of course instruction, (ii) organization and evaluation of a faculty mentoring program, and (iii) teaching and evaluation of faculty professional development workshops.  

Applicants must have completed a PhD in a STEM field or STEM education field by the start of the appointment.  Preferred applicants will have experience in STEM education research, faculty professional development, and research-based instructional strategies. Successful candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to work independently and collaboratively, and be able to interact with faculty across different disciplines.

Initial appointments are for 1 year with the possibility of extending for up to 1.5 additional years. Applications should include (i) a cover letter, (ii) a one-page summary of the applicant’s educational research interests, (iii) a curriculum vitae, and (iv) three letters of recommendation. All materials should be emailed to Dr. Leilani Arthurs (larthurs2@unl.edu). Application review will begin on March 1, 2014, and continue until the positions are filled. Preferred start date is August 4, 2014.

Mon, Jan 27th at 2PM - Small Group Discussion on Academia, Research Focused

Dr. Damon Clark, assistant professor in MCDB at Yale University, will lead an one-hour discussion on Monday, January 27th at 2pm in KBT 1214b.

Career Mentor's Bio: Damon Clark is an Assistant Professor in MCDB. He is just starting a new lab there. Dr. Clark's lab is interested in understanding how networks of neurons work together to perform computations. He did his undergraduate degree in physics and analyzed mammalian brain architecture. He spent the year before graduate school as a Princeton-in-Africa Fellow for the International Rescue Committee, working on grants, needs assessments, and map-making in Somaliland. As a graduate student in physics, he worked on quantitative approaches to measuring C. elegans behavior and neural activity. He briefly got back to California to study the visual motion processing in Drosophila.

Small Group Discussion on Scientific Outreach and Seminar on Social Media Professional Profiles by Dr. Jeanne Garbarino - Tuesday, Jan 21st 3pm and 5pm Respectively


CNSPY and the CDPG program is pleased to bring Dr. Jeanne Garbarino, Director of Science Outreach at Rockefeller University, to Yale next week on Tuesday, January 21st.   She will be holding a small group discussion at 3pm for selected participants and a seminar later that day at 5pm, open to all members. 
 Dr. Jeanne Garbarino, Director of Science Outreach at Rockefeller University, will lead an one-hour discussion on Tuesday, January 21st at 3pm in KBT 1202.   The discussion will be career oriented and students are encouraged to ask questions regarding a career in scientific outreach.  Please email Tiffany Tsang (tiffany.tsang@yale.edu) to secure one of the few remaining spots.
Later on Tuesday, January 21st at 5pm in KBT 1214, Dr. Garbarino will present a seminar entitled: Harnessing social media to expand your network and raise your professional profile   This event is open to all members and those at Yale. 

Bio: Dr. Garbarino completed her Ph.D. at the Columbia University Medical Center. Thereafter, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University. Since 2011, she has been a co-organizer of SpotOn NYC, a monthly discussion series intended to address current events relevant to science communication. She is also the Biology editor for Double X Science, an online science magazine for women. Since 2012, she has been the Director of Science Outreach at Rockefeller University.

Dr. Ken Blount, cofounder and director of biology at BioRelix Inc., will lead an one-hour discussion on Monday, January 13th at 1pm, location TBA.

Career Mentor's Bio: Dr. Ken Blount earned his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado, studying the mechanisms of RNA enzymes (ribozymes).  He went onto an NIH Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of California at San Diego, studying RNA-targeting small-molecular antibiotics.  In 2004, he contacted Ron Breaker at Yale regarding Ron's interest in forming a startup focused on developing antibiotics that target RNA riboswitches.  In 2005, he joined Ron's team, leading the effort to found BioRelix.  BioRelix secured seed-round investment in 2006 and Series A investment in 2007 and is currently developing novel antibiotics that target riboswitches.  BioRelix has also formed a research collaboration with Merck Pharmaceuticals to leverage the unique riboswitch target portfolio.
